Located in the heart of Manchester City Centre, Charles Street is a 15-storey purpose-built student accommodation project that will deliver 107 thoughtfully designed student beds. The scheme aims to breathe new life into an underutilised site and has been designed to promote the health and wellbeing of students.
The development will feature generous amenities, including dedicated study areas, private meeting rooms, parcel room, laundry and cycle storage, as well as a social area intended for table games, gaming, movie screening, general socialising, and group dining. Students also have access to a walled garden at ground level - a private space that changes in appearance across the hours of the day and months of the year.
The building’s composition relates directly to its immediate context, with the mass, colour and detailing of its materials being carefully considered to complement the surrounding buildings. takes cues from the historic fabric and explores the use of two different languages, to respond to townscaping considerations. Materially, a palette of jade green glazed terracotta on the north-south elevation, and buff-cream glazed brick on the east-west elevation is proposed, making the scheme a vibrant addition to the area. It also incorporates ornamental patterned ventilation panels panels which draw upon the neighbouring heritage assets, adding texture, privacy and a visually engaging play of light and shadow.
Aimed to regenerate an underutilised site, the delivery of this project ensures a well-connected, supportive and inclusive environment tailored to the welfare of students. The scheme has also been designed to BREEAM Excellent.
