At SimpsonHaugh, we see physical modelmaking as fundamental to the design development process, using it to explore and refine building proposals. Models are used as tools within the design teams, in client meetings and for public consultation as a means of conveying ideas. We're lucky enough to have our own Model Shop and Model Makers at our Manchester studio.
We're therefore excited to be working with the Sheffield School of Architecture and to be able to present an award centred on model making. The awards will be for final year students at Part I and Part II level (third- and sixth-year students), and we will award 2 monetary prizes per cohort (First Prize and Highly Commended). The prizes will be presented at the end of year show on Friday 16 June 2023.
Award Criteria
Alongside the third- and sixth-year teams, we will be reviewing the student portfolios to establish a shortlist. All students within these year groups will be considered.
Although final presentation models are a great way to bring together a completed design and polished making skills, we will also be looking for evidence of sketch / study models which test and explore design elements. These quick studies are a great way to showcase the development of the design and we hope to understand how the model has aided the overall design process.
Afternoon Drop-in Session
On Tuesday 9 May, SimpsonHaugh Model Makers Kaia Williams and Saul Parker-Backhouse will be visiting the Sheffield School of Architecture workshop to offer students some general guidance and advice on model making.
We look forward to reviewing the student portfolios and presenting the final awards at the end of year show on 16 June 2023!
