Located within the heart of Sale Town Centre, The Square is a mixed‐use development forming the first phase of works proposed for the wider regeneration of The Square Shopping Centre.
Development at The Square is set to transform and revitalise the existing retail environment whilst delivering a much needed gateway into Sale Town Centre from the south. Improved pedestrian legibility and connections are provided through the introduction of extensive public realm, with new retail, bars and restaurants activating the ground floor. The Square also provides 184 apartments, 18 townhouses, a cinema and associated public and private car parking, all designed to make this a great place to live, shop and entertain.
A new pedestrian retail avenue links the existing central square to a new public space at the southern end of the site. The cinema building is located to the east of the avenue, whilst to the west, two taller buildings compromising the residential apartments are elevated above a retail and car park podium that relates to the immediate context at street level.
In response to the scale and massing of the surrounding context, the two apartment buildings are strategically positioned towards the northern edges of the site with the tallest building addressing and activating the central square. A row of two and three storey townhouses completes the urban block with access provided from street level and the south facing podium garden space.
Brick is the predominant material used throughout the development with a variety of expressed grids providing order and hierarchy across the different facades. The façade grid to the residential buildings acts as a frame to individual rooms providing depth to the façade surface whilst the object cinema building is formed from an interesting combination of projecting, recessed and coloured brickwork.
